Building a Wall

September 2022

Hurricane Fiona made landfall in the Dominican Republic on September 19, 2022, leaving a devastating path of destruction, especially at the Niños de Cristo Orphanage, in its wake. Its powerful winds tore through the 13-foot-high and 295-foot-long wall, exposing the children’s safety, demolishing the nearby trees and playground, and leaving the basketball court strewn with a somber display of ripped-up trees. In the aftermath, however, the Niños Matter volunteers rallied together, generously donating materials and hiring skilled labor to complete the reconstruction of the wall by February 2023.

Building a Home

October 2022

Teaming up with the Hilton La Romana Resort in October 2022, a dedicated team of employees and Niños Matter volunteers embarked on a transformative house project, constructing two homes from the ground up. They leveled the ground, laid cinder blocks, and eventually framed the roof. The project reached a heartwarming conclusion when Juanchi's house was completed in April 2023, providing a new home for his family of five. This initiative holds special significance for Niños Matter, as it enabled Juanchi's son and daughter, who had been living in Columbia due to a lack of space, to finally return home and be reunited with their parents and older sister.

Painting a Court

January 2022

Adjacent to the Niños de Cristo Orphanage, a community basketball court served as a cherished gathering place. Over the years, neglect and the nearby river took its toll, leaving the court in disrepair. Seeing the peeling paint and water damage, we recognized an opportunity for transformation. On April 26, 2022, Niños Matter volunteers and the local community united to breathe new life into the court. We repainted the entire court, revitalizing the heart of the community and infusing the court with joy, pride, and love.
