In October 2022, Niños Matter joined hands with the compassionate team at Hilton La Romana Resort to take on a project that was more than just construction—it was a labor of love and hope. What began as a blueprint and a shared vision quickly turned into one of our most heartfelt initiatives yet: building two homes from the group up for families in desperate need of safe, permanent shelter.
From the very first day, volunteers and dedicated employees worked side by side—leveling rocky ground, stacking heavy cinder blocks, and carefully framing the roofs under the warm Caribbean sun. There were no shortcuts, just sweat, laughter, and the shared determination to make something lasting.
One of the homes held particular significance for everyone involved: the future home of Juanchi and his family of five. For years, space had been a heartbreaking limitation. While Juanchi, his wife, and one of their daughters lived in the Dominican Republic, their two youngest children had been living in Colombia, separated by both distance and circumstance. It was a painful reality for a family full of love but without enough room to grow together. That all changed in April 2023, when the final nail was hammered, the last tile laid, and the front door unlocked. Juanchi’s home was finally complete.
What once was just land now stood as a symbol of possibility—a safe place where laughter would echo, meals would be shared around the table, and a family, once divided, would be whole again. The completion of this home didn't just offer shelter—it restored something far more precious: togetherness. Thanks to this project, Juanchi's son and daughter were able to return from Colombia and be reunited with their parents and older sister. Watching them embrace for the first time in years was a moment no one present will ever forget.
